With the help of our llamas, the
trek into base camp is made easier with light packs. Climbing
gear, food and tentage becomes the responsibility of our four-footed
companions. Whether your group is family, friends, or old climbing
partners, these trips offer a wonderful variety of activities
in the mountain environment.
Each trip goes into the Eagles Nest Wilderness. Camp is set
in the upper reaches of the Pitkin Creek Valley. With a backdrop
of high peaks and a pristine Alpine Lake, you will be introduced
to the fundamentals of rock climbing and mountaineering. Depending
on the length of the trip; rock climbing, rappelling, snow climbing,
low impact camping and the mountain environment will be covered.
The focus of these programs is to give each person a basic understanding
of climbing and the systems that make it safe. We stress understanding
mountain climbing concepts and provide plenty of time on the
rock. Camp life is enhanced with hearty meals, and a sharing
of knowledge of many aspects of backpacking, climbing, mountaineering
and Natural History.
Pitkin Creek Trailhead to Pitkin Lake base camp (6.5 miles,3300
ft. elevation gain)
Ground School, an introduction to the basic equipment and rope
handling skills (knots,belaying, safety) necessary for rock climbing.
Introduction to "top roping" and the fundamentals of climbing.
Additional climbing on nearby sites, with an emphasis on improving
technique and an introduction to multi-pitch routes and rappelling.
Late afternoon "bouldering"
or fishing.
Introduction to snow climbing and the techniques and equipment
needed. An afternoon of challenging rock climbing on the "Green
Wall".
Graduation Day! Test your skills and feel the exuberance of a
Multi-Pitch Rock Climb.
Break camp and head back into the Vail Valley. Optional routes
are available.
Four or five day camps will follow same basic itinerary.
